Art Moscow Postpones, Hoping Things Will Perk Up By Fall "Art Moscow, one of Russia's biggest contemporary-art fairs, has been postponed to September to tap a crowd headed for a larger exhibition, as falling oil prices and squeezed credit quell art purchases among the nation's rich." The director of the company that puts on Art Moscow, which was to have opened May 14, put it this way: "By September, everyone will have gotten used to the new reality of the crisis." Bloomberg 02/18/09
Fair Use - Shepard Fairey's Battle For An Image "Call this pop art for the street. Call it conceptual graphics. Either way, Fairey's imagery has stood out in an era when skate-and surfer-related graphics are burgeoning, even if his work has roots in the same." San Diego Union-Tribune 02/15/09
The Art Boom Is Over (Hooray!) "The contemporary art market, with its abiding reputation for foggy deals and puffy values, is a vulnerable organism, traditionally hit early and hard by economic malaise. That's what's happening now. Sales are vaporizing. Careers are leaking air. Chelsea rents are due. The boom that was is no more." The New York Times 02/15/09
Paul Ruiz
Paul holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts Education from the University of Melbourne.

In Paul's own words "My work explores a continued fascination with mapping the observed and imagined human figure. I employ the human subject as a metaphor for creative inquiry where the figure is formed through experimentation, process and chance. What begins with drawing is often re-conceived directly on the canvas as I build or efface the image with rags, hands and palette knife. Observation, memory and imagination also play a key role in my studio process. For me human presence is consequently revealed, suggested or masked by this very physical and material ritual of painting over time. A practice which excavates and masks the human subject is central to my understanding of painting in a digital and media saturated age."

Christina Pitsch
Christina holds an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College. In Christina's own words "My own body of work is a hybrid of materials and techniques driven by larger conceptual questions of cultural icons and gender identification. I am interested in the relationships that people have with objects and how this radically differs between the sexes. I transform objects in a variety of ways, usually working in multiples. My hybrids have ancestry in the traditional mounting of trophy game heads infused with the decorative kitsch of a grandmother's figurine collection".

Cleon Peterson
Cleon Peterson is an LA-based painter and graphic artist. Peterson’s paintings depict a world in chaos-- characters in the paintings are shown committing random acts of violence within environments where riots appear to be the rule of law. These clashing figures symbolize a struggle between power and submission and reflect aspects of social frustration that can be found just under the surface of contemporary society. In his paintings the brutality is raw-- no actions are concealed and there is no fine line between winners and losers. Cleon took some time from his schedule to answer a few questions for the Myartspace Blog...
Poster Boy
The street artist known as Poster Boy has been turning heads in New York City. Poster Boy, who has chosen to remain anonymous, has been described as being a rare breed of visual revolutionary who can't be bought. Poster Boy will make any street art purist proud-- his work is fresh considering that so many before him-- Shepard Fairey, Ron English, and Banksy-- have ended up meshing money with their social message. I don’t blame them-- once older even a street artist must think about his or her financial future, true? I suppose with the old street/urban art vanguard we can stomach the contradictions. That said, it is exciting to see that a young street artist like Poster Boy is starting to make waves without a dollar attachment.

Poster Boy captures a youthful energy with his work. The 20-something artist has stated that he strives to establish an art movement-- he hopes that others will use the Poster Boy alias in order to add to the dialogue on the streets. Of the movement Poster Boy has said, “No copyright, no authorship. A social thing, as opposed to being an artist making things for bored rich people to hang above their couch.” It will be interesting to observe how this movement grows...
Ariane Bartosh
Ariane Bartosh is a figurative painter with a background in interior design. Her earlier work involved candid photos of her friends that she would then compile and use as references for her paintings. Bartosh’s newer series involves ideas that are already drawn out. Bartosh describes her current process, “I pick a person in my life, then I find photos of objects, wallpaper, and furniture that remind me of them. Then I collage everything together with photos of the person I have taken specifically for the painting. After all that I paint.”.

Bartosh has stated that her earlier work was focused on social commentary about youth, specifically young women in our society. In a sense, her work explored the beauty and awkwardness during the transition between youth and adulthood. A time where freedom, independence and self expressions is highly valued. For this Bartosh examined her own experiences and observed the actions of her peers. These paintings reveal the chaotic process of coming into ones self possession...
