Lilah Pinkas

Concrete
Lilah was born in Israel. In her own words "Fantasy, functionalism, dream, reality, mythology and unconscious, material transforms to abstract transforms to legend, these are what the hard core of Lilah Pinkas' art is made of. The Drawing and photography are dealing with the endless search for what is beyond sight. The papier-mâché sculptures recycle daily materials (such as iron strings, wood and mirrors) to test their essence in the human aspect. The stone sculptures are in a constant dialogue with cultures, universal symbols and the internal world. Lilah's art works were gathered in a book called "DreaMache" that integrates sculptured images and dream bytes to a forest tale full of horror and magic."

Candice Lewis

Installations -- Yellow Gallery
Candice was born in the US and currently lives in Germany. She holds a BFA from University of Illinois and an MFA from University of Tennessee in Sculpture. In Cadice's own words "What is the guiding principle of the physiology of perception? In the arena of metaphysical research it has been postulated that perception is contingent upon the awareness of our surroundings through the medium of our senses. Until recently researchers have presumed that perception is causal. Contemporary metaphysical research asserts however, that this may not be the case and propose that it may possibly be the reverse. It has been suggested that awareness emanates from within. That is to say, we as individuals forge our own reality, within which we reside and in turn react to."

Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

Fred Nall Hollis (Nall)

Fred Nall Hollis, known internationally simply as "Nall," was born April 21, 1948 in Troy, Alabama. Nall was born into old wealth-- a Southern family that originally drew its wealth from a cotton plantation and later, from the oil industry and finance. In many ways, the roots of his artistic exploration are intertwined with the roots of his State of birth-- a message that Nall has taken with him throughout his travels. Nall's travels to Mexico, Germany, India, France and other countries have helped to cultivate the message that can be discovered within the context of his art. His work often observes the injustice of the past alongside the beauty and harmony that can be found in life-- this bittersweet message is conveyed in his art --one that every individual, origin aside, can relate to on some level...

Andrea Loefke-- HomeBase III

Andrea Loefke is an accomplished German installation artist, who has shown extensively in NY and Germany, and is a Smack Melon resident. Andrea offered her time in order to discuss her installation, Home Sweet Home, which is on display at HomeBase III. Andrea has created a whole room based on the concept of food and cooking in a humoristic atmosphere that reminds one of a picnic scene. Andrea actually cooks at the project every Wednesday at 8 pm and throughout the weekends, simple homey foods – like oatmeal. While Andrea prepares food, visitors are allowed to explore the world that she has created in her space at HomeBase III-- as long as their shoes are off! ...

Art News by Art News Journal

Ups and Downs at Christies -- "Fears that the Christie's sale of Impressionist and modern art would usher in a market meltdown were assuaged early Tuesday evening when everything from a Monet landscape to a monumental sculpture by Rodin brought record prices. But the sale also had its bumps, as 14 out of 58 works failed to sell because they were considered either too expensive or second-rate examples by first-rate artists." The New York Times 05/07/08

Art-As-Currency: The Global Test -- "Think of it as the art world's 'new math.' A new generation of collectors, dealers and financiers have come to treat art as a highly sophisticated financial instrument: tradable, globally recognizable, in demand and liquid around the world. Suddenly, some of the most prized names in contemporary art are the more prolific ones, those with signature images (like Damien Hirst's ubiquitous "spin art" paintings), since inventories can be traded much like currency." Wall Street Journal 05/06/08

How To Make Your City Hip: Big Art -- All around downtown Orlando, art is turning up in public places -- baroque statues in front of the Plaza, an abstract aluminum sculpture next to City Hall, a series of narrow aluminum panels in blocks of mustard, orange and red... Orlando Sentinel 05/03/08
