| Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week. |
![]() Kayleigh Speck |
![]() Graduate Work |
In Kayleigh's words "I use photography as a tool for exploration of surroundings, people, events and happenings. With subjects varying from portraits to landscapes, the content is derived from personal experience." She is a candidate for an MFA in Studio Art from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BFA in Studio Art with a Concentration in Photography and Printmaking from Rhode Island College. |

![]() Paintings 2008 |
In his own words "At this moment in time I make oil paintings and video-installations. My paintings are situated between abstraction and figuration. A formal approach is essential to me. Recently I started painting abstracted seascapes, mainly because the impervious and endless nature of the ocean strongly appeals to me. In romanticist esthetics reference is made to the "sublime" in order to express the spiritual experience of the Absolute when man is confronted with nature in its vastness." |

![]() The New Intimacy Project |
Jess graduated from Barnard College at Columbia University where she studied with renowned photographer Thomas Roma, who quickly became her Mentor. At Barnard she was awarded the largest grant possible allotted to a single student for her senior thesis photography project titled, “intimate portraits: Women on the Loos.” |
![]() Susan Heggestad |
![]() Susan M Heggestad |
In Susan's own words "I am drawn to printmaking because of the endless potential for variations on a theme. I have little interest in creating multiples, which is the definition of the medium. To me, this captures the very nature of our mysterious existence in this universe: endless variations on a theme… My mixed-media prints are always one-of-a-kind works. They all begin, however, with a limited number of collagraphic plates. The collagraphic process is about texture - thin layers of found objects and modeling material are used to gradually build the printed image. The technique relates directly to collage, relief sculpture and mixed media. The collagraph process is sculptural in its conception and my understanding of spatial relationships and the effects of light are strongly influenced by my experience in technical theater." |
![]() Joshua Parker |
![]() Gallery |
In Joshua's words "I love to create, always have. And I try to be fresh and original. I work in a variety of methods and materials, from steel fab, wood carving, moldmaking, hand sculpting, glass blowing to regular printer paper. Art is my life and i never stop thinking about the possibilities." |

![]() Horatio Holtzbein |
![]() Holtzbein |
In Horatio's words "Predicated on the conviction that it is a good thing for an artist to feel like a tortoise perpetually chasing a hare, one of my current goals in life is to produce a figurative drawing worthy of Thomas Rowlandson in the form of a painting worthy of Jacques Louis David! Though not immune to the allure of contemporary methods of working, I'd rather indulge my obsession with and passion for the techniques prevalent 'pre-impressionism'. It's just a personal preference." |
| Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights. |
