Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week.

Steven Quinn

Gaze
Steven Quinn was born in Northern Ireland. He holds a BA and MFA. In his own words "I am primarily interested in the tedium of modern life, boredom and empty spaces and people." Steven's work has been exhibited at the Knitting Factory, Trampoline House (Seattle and New York), the National Portrait Gallery (London) and MOMA Glasgow, Scotland.

Teresa Puig

Teresa Puig
Teresa holds an MA in Fine Art from University of Wales Institute Cardiff, United Kingdom and a BA in Visual Arts from University of Glurcestershire, United Kingdom. Teresa was born in Barcelona, Spain. Teresa Puig creates work that explores the issues of memory and mortality, inspired by the situation in countries or places affected by violence, economic instability or abuse of human rights. Her work is a metaphoric and poetic response to violence and injustice experienced globally.

Premium Spotlight

Daniel John Gadd

New Paintings
Daniell holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and lives in New York City. In his own words "I use painting as a way of discovering and learning about myself in order to foster personal growth and maturity. I acknowledge the futility of language in expressing the very deepest emotions of the human experience, and the role art has in filling in the spaces. Through my art, I invoke the importance of relationships as a defining characteristic of man, being a social animal. I explore the effect relationships have in forming us as human beings, starting from the moment of birth until the moment we pass on. My paintings are a personal expression of myself and others I have directly affected as well as those whom have directly affected me."

Jake Sorrill

Photographs
In Jack's own words "if only... is about beauty. if only... is about looking at objects in a new and interesting way. Growing up in small town Illinois, Jake Sorrill has learned to examine the everyday with a critical eye. As a senior at Routt Catholic High School, Jake has developed an extensive portfolio peppered with the things we see everyday - flowers, trees, animals - captured in a way that focuses on the object's beauty. Just as nature is beautiful, even the harshness of a cold urban street can have its own beauty."

Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

Matthew Mahler

"Matthew notes I know school is not for everyone, but I have nothing but good things to say about being there. Currently pursuing my MFA at Queens College, I went to Hofstra University as an undergraduate where I studied art education. However I was really lucky and had some great teachers dating back to elementary school that nurtured my curiosity for learning...."

Nicole Natri

"Nicole Natri explores diverse antique and semi-antique material in order to examine the history of dualism and double standards and our belief in the man-made Truth, often using the esthetics found in older engravings."

Caitlin Karolczak

"Caitlin Karolczak was born 1984 in northern Minnesota. She received a BFA in Fine Arts and BA in Art History at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in May of 2005. She currently resides in Minneapolis Minnesota working as a self employed artist and co-gallery owner. Her art studio and gallery are in the historic Grain Belt Brewery complex in NE Minneapolis. Besides painting, her interests include vintage medical and post-mortem photography, mid-century modern furnishings and art, fine design, fashion, snowboarding, digital photography, and travel."

Art News by Art News Journal

Sotheby's auction triumphs over art market gloom "Despite rumours of a downturn in the contemporary art market, as well as disappointing results at a Christie's post-war and contemporary art auction earlier this month, the sale exceeded its £72m estimate and set a record for contemporary art auctions in Europe." The Guardian (UK) 02/28/08

The World's Most Popular Museums In 2007 (A List) "Unsurprisingly, counting total attendance immediately catapults the great, historic museums of art and culture high up the list: the Louvre in Paris comes first with 8.3m, the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Vatican Museums, the Hermitage, the Prado, all do well here." The Art Newspaper 02/25/08

Has Professionalism In The Arts Killed Creativity? "Creativity needs the spark of friction, anger and adversity. Necessity really is the mother of invention. Creativity thrives on different points of view brought about by people having a variety of different experiences. By making entry impossible to those who can't or won't conform to an establishment norm means ending up with a dull monotony; a once exciting ferment reduced to the functional banality of a tax return." The Guardian (UK) 02/25/08

Sentiment, Apathy, or Somewhere In Between. "Sentiment, Apathy, or Somewhere In Between marks JenMarie's first solo exhibition at the Wooltex Gallery in Cleveland. It will feature a large breadth her visually stunning large scale abstracted landscapes. myartspace RSS Feed, February 28, 2008
