Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week.

Tom Condon

Letting
Tom was born in Bath, Maine in 1977. Growing up as a military brat provided him with many travels with short stops. Virginia was his place of education and deconstruction. Physically, the temporary loss of his arms and his eyes opened as many doors as they closed. Mentally, Ray Kass and Gary Schneider forced Tom to go outside and play. Tom is currently teaching for VCUarts in the Department of Photography and Film. In the Spring of 2007 he was awarded a Professional Fellowship in Printmaking from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. He works in LAB 307 with a number of outstanding image makers and space takers. His art is represented by John Pollard at ADA Gallery in Richmond, Virginia.

Goran Despotovski

Mumbled
Goran Despotovski was born in Vrsac, Serbia in 1972. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad at the Painting Department where he completed his postgraduate studies as well. Goran has had solo exhbitions 19 times, group exhibitions in Belgrade, Nis, Novi Sad, Toronto, Montreal, and St. Petersburgh. He is currently an assistant lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad (Serbia).

Lynn Digby

Paintings
In her own words "I am a contemporary realist. Much of my work has to do with finding harmony in complexity, and realism serves as my vehicle. Awareness of the paint surface and tactile qualities of brush and canvas are key to my approach. I want my paintings to obviously be what they are without being overly derivative, photographic, or formulaic."

MaryKate Maher

New 2007-2008 Project
MaryKate was born in Philadelphia, PA and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She holds an MFA Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a BFA Arcadia University. Her work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group shows.

Lucy Turnbull

Sons & Brothers
Turnbull studied at Adelaide Central School of Art and regularly exhibits in South Australia. This year she was awarded the Cibo Espresso Emerging Artist Prize and was included in "Curvy 4", a book featuring female illustrators & designers. In 2006 she was the inaugural recipient of the Ed Tweddell Studio at Central Studios and had a solo exhibition 'Sons & Brothers' in the South Australian Living Artists Festival.

Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

JenMarie Zeleznak

"JenMarie Zeleznak's paintings deal with themes of death and despair while exploring the emotional sensations that stem from hopelessness, loss, and social disconnection. JenMarie's paintings seem to contain cruel layers of paint-- each mark representing a sense of peril, but further observation reveals that a glimpse of hope remains. JenMarie's work is about survival-- overcoming the obstacles and burdens that each of us face at some point. They are like psychological landscapes... revealing the conflicting storms of the human psyche, condition, and collective humanity...."

Franck Benoualid

"Franck Benoualid was born in Toulouse, France. Inspired by the work of the classic Masters, Benoualid has developed his own voice, which combines elements of abstract and figurative methods. Benoualid blends color and line to create a sense of tension within his paintings. His focus on the human form reveals the essence of the human condition as seen through his eyes. On a side note, Franck and I experienced a language barrier during this interview..."

Dejan Kaludjerovic

"Dejan Kaludjerovic received his MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts of Belgrade in 2004, he also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the Academy of Applied Arts, Vienna, in Erwin Wurm's class. Dejan's work often deals with how the mass media, fueled by Western influence, can manipulate individuals and groups into altering their cultural landscape-- changes that often have negative results. He is currently based in Vienna. ..."

Kelly Mudge

"Kelly Mudge is an artist who is interested in exploring the many aspects of the human condition with her work. Kelly does not focus on the outward appearance of her models. Instead, she seeks to capture their personality by focusing on their inner workings-- the emotional side of their being. In a sense, Kelly strives to reveal the essence of her subjects. Kelly graduated from Pratt Institute where she studied under several influential instructors-- including Joe Smith and David Passalaqua...."

Lucy Puls

"Lucy Puls is a mixed media sculptor who has exhibited her work primarily in California and New York. Her work is included in many public and private collections, including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Oakland Museum.. Her work involves ordinary consumer items that are often used and discarded. Lucy received her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and has been a Professor of Art at University of California, Davis, since 1985...."

Chinese Art Is Hot - So Where Is Hong Kong? "In terms of the narratives found in its art, it is easy to see how the city fails to grab much attention.
