BIOGRAPHY
As someone once put it, "...the fascinating thing about her work is that the characters, the edginess, and the stories that come from the moodscapes and expressive abstract pieces look like pieces one might expect from a rough boozer in their 60s. Yet, Pennington is not a jaded middle-aged artist who's lived too much. Looking at her, you'd never expect to see this edginess or knowledge about life beyond the mainstream, conservative, happy-go-lucky personality she otherwise has. The balance between the pleasant versus the tense, dark pieces clearly proves that the work isn't simply coming from somebody who is disturbed, but from someone who has paid attention to things of this world that are disturbing and need paying attention to. She acknowledges the beautiful and the ugly with amazing ease."
Ginger Pennington was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1982, and began creating artwork since she could pick up a crayon. She began polishing her drawing skills during High School, before heading for "the art capital of the world" aka New York City in 2000. She spent two years there learning Advertising Design under the wings of legendary designers at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
But Pennington was to return to Richmond, Virginia to finish schooling at Virginia Commonwealth University to become an Art Educator. Living in NYC during 9-11-01 sent her looking for different goals and messages within her artwork and personal life. Using art and the creation process to understand and work out the trauma of witnessing such a huge piece of American history and tragedy, she felt compelled to give back to the future of America's Youth. Pennington taught children ranging from ages 5-18 for two years at inner-city, private, and public schools in Richmond.
Interestingly, she is in a period of transition once again after relocating to New York City. During her free time, she focuses on creating and displaying new works while absorbing the many inspirational experiences one can find in New York City. The future is open-wide for emerging artist Ginger Pennington.
